7:15:  Planetary Dignity and the Zodiac Debate                                Richard Fidler

Description: When we compare Western and Vedic astrology we find that they are nearly identical in their core principles. The major difference between them is the Zodiac question: Tropical or Sidereal? While the growing interest in Jyotish in the West confronts us with this conundrum with increasing regularity, there have been ardent exponents of a Sidereal Zodiac among Western astrologers using otherwise Western astrological techniques. There are even of late some vocal Vedic Tropicalists: this is not purely an East vs. West issue. This is one of astrology’s most thorny controversies. All too often this contentious debate remains too narrowly focussed on the relevant history and speculation regarding what the ancients were thinking when they ‘invented’ the zodiac. In the hope of directing this discourse into a more visceral and practical direction, this lecture will present a comparison of the outcomes of applying the Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs, using a diverse selection of notable nativities.

Biography: Richard Fidler has been a practising astrologer for over 25 years. Richard started exploring Jyotish in 1997 and now uses the geometric methods of Western astrology alongside the Sidereal horoscopic techniques of Vedic astrology. Richard was awarded the title of ‘Jyotish Martanda’ by the Krishnamurti Institute of Astrology in Calcutta in 2014 and has since served on the organizing committee of the IVC conferences in India. He was chairperson of the Cape Town based Cape Astrology Association from 2015 to 2017 and remains integral to its management. His work has been published in several astrological publications, such as the Mountain Astrologer and the ISAR Journal, as well as in the regular media, including South African political forecasts for Business Insider.

7:00 The Neptune Void – Martin Moritz

The placement of Neptune in a chart is often the source of our capacity for longing and idealisation. Deep down in us lies a need to merge with another person, an ideal, a state of dreamy sensual delight and ecstasy. This can come to us in various forms. We can be devoted to a course, a partner or family member, find great joy in art or travels. Or we can get lost by misusing drugs, becoming the victim of self-deception or running out empty from getting manipulated by other persons or circumstances. In many cases we experience both extremes, which makes Neptune’s realm so very foggy and mysterious. We shall explore the reasons for our yearning and why disappointment and de-idealisation can drain out all our energy, but can also be a kick to let go of unrealistic demands and expectations.
